چکیده

X-ray line profiles represent a new way of studying the winds of massive stars. In particular, they enable us to probe in detail the wind-wind collision in colliding wind binaries, providing new insights into the structure and dynamics of the X-ray-emitting regions. We present the key results of new analysis of high-resolution Chandra X-ray spectra of two important colliding wind systems, Velorum and WR140. The lines of Vel are essentially unshifted from their rest wavelengths, which we suggest is evidence of a wide shock opening angle, indicative of sudden radiative braking. The widths of the lines of WR140 are correlated with ionization potential, implying nonequilibrium ionization. The implications of these results for the radio emission from these systems are discussed, as are some of the future directions for X-ray line profile modeling of colliding wind binaries.

Hydrodynamics and High-energy Physics of Wr Colliding Winds

The stellar winds flowing out of the components of WR + OB binaries can collide and the shock waves are formed. Stellar wind collision, particle acceleration by the shocks and generation of X-ray, γ-ray, radio and IR emission in WR + OB binaries are discussed.

X - ray binaries in the star cluster R 136 in the 30 Doradus region

We analyzed archival Chandra X-ray observations of the central portion of the 30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The image contains 20 X-ray point sources with luminosities between 5× 10 and 2× 10 erg s (0.2 – 3.5 keV). A dozen sources have bright WN Wolf-Rayet or spectral type O stars as optical counterparts. Nine of these are within ∼ 3.4 pc of R 136, the central star cluster of...

Complex wind dynamics and ionization structure in symbiotic binaries

Aspects of the wind-dynamics in symbiotic binaries, colliding winds and accretion, are reviewed. Inconsistencies between theory and observations of the hot star wind are discussed. If the hot star wind were governed by CAK theory, nearly all symbiotics would be colliding wind binaries. For the case of colliding winds, 3D hydrodynamical simulations reveal that the matter distribution is spirally...

The dominant X-ray wind in massive star binaries

We investigate which shocked wind is responsible for the majority of the X-ray emission in colliding wind binaries, an issue where there is some confusion in the literature, and which we show is more complicated than has been assumed. We find that where both winds rapidly cool (typically close binaries), the ratio of the wind speeds is often more important than the momentum ratio, because it co...

The X-ray Spectra of Symbiotic Stars

Symbiotic stars are thought to show distinct X-ray emission from the accreting object and from the colliding winds of the two stars. I show that the colliding wind component is unnecessary. Instead, the spectra can be interpreted as emission only from the compact object that is strongly absorbed by the partially-ionised wind of the red giant. There remains no evidence of any X-ray emission from...
